Starting July 11, WCHC Mount Vernon will be open late from 5 pm to 7 pm every Thursday to provide comprehensive physical exams and routine healthcare for men. The exams will address each man’s unique health concerns and needs and include a heart health evaluation, diabetes risk assessment, a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test, behavioral health assessment, and general health screenings. WCHC’s healthcare team will address any immediate concerns and provide recommendations for follow-up care. The location will offer a welcoming and comfortable environment for men, including refreshments, games, guest speakers, and men’s health information.
The new extended care hours are part of WCHC’s Health Initiative for Men (HIM) Program which aims to address the significant health disparities in healthcare access and outcomes faced by communities of color as compared to their white counterparts. The Program is partially funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health, Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities Prevention.
“Communities of color disproportionately suffer from many diseases such as heart disease and diabetes and men are less likely to seek medical care, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment,” said Judith Watson, CEO of Westchester Community Health Center. “Our HIM Program seeks to remove the barriers that might be in the way of men accessing preventative health screenings and to encourage men to become more invested in their health.”
